Many homeowners at the lake assume that just because they have coverage for their home, their boat is automatically included with their homeowners’ policy. That assumption is only partially true, at the Lake of the Ozarks; boats, docks, and liability risks can create coverage gaps. Most homeowner’s policies don’t cover specific perils that commonly occur here.
What Homeowners Insurance May Cover
Included in your homeowners policy may be on the water rafts like kayaks and canoes, sometimes motorized watercrafts like smaller fishing boats. Limited coverage may be provided for smaller boats; however, the coverage limits may be very low. Certain boats or motors may not apply due to the value or size.
What Boat Insurance Covers
Collisions Damage
- Storm Damage
- Theft
- Liability Coverage
- Towing Assistance
- On and off water
- Damage to docks or other boats
With how popular and busy the Lake of the Ozarks has become, these coverages are necessary due to high water crowds and common storms.
Common Coverage Gaps at the Lake of the Ozarks
Jet skis that get into accidents are only covered under a specialized PWC policy. When a friend is operating your boat, that is also not covered. Damage done to your dock is not covered under a boatowner’s policy. Vacation rental guests using your personal watercraft are also not covered. Wear and tear is NOT covered.
When Separate Boat Insurance Makes Sense
You will likely need separate boat insurance if:
- Your boat has high horsepower
- Outboard motors over 25 HP and inboard motors over 50 HP
- You own a pontoon or wake boat
- Multiple people drive it
- You keep it at the marina
- You use it often during the summer
