During the summer, docks at the Lake of the Ozarks take a beating due to the heavy boat traffic and constant use. When getting hit by everything, including wind and hail, vandalism, and all other perils, here’s a quick rundown of what might and might not be covered for your dock.
Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Dock Damage
Under a homeowners policy, a dock may be covered under “Other Coverage”; this would mean it is subject to 10% of your home’s main dwelling coverage limit. The cause of the damage can also have a big effect on what is and is not covered. Some covered perils include:
- Wind
- Fire
- Hail
- Vandalism
Does Boat Insurance Cover Your Dock
While boat insurance and dock insurance are written separately, damage caused to someone else’s dock may be covered under liability insurance. Your boat insurance is what covers damage done to others’ docks, but does not include damage done to your own dock. Review both of these policies to help prevent out-of-pocket expenses.
What Insurance Typically Won’t Cover (Exclusions)
- Wear and tear from normal aging
- Rotting wood, rust, corrosion, and deterioration
- Damage due to a lack of maintenance
Vacation Rentals and Dock Liability
Due to the additional liability risks created by VRBO and Airbnb guests, standard homeowners’ policies may have certain restrictions on coverage. Damage caused by renters may not be covered in the same way as damage caused by a family member. When asking for coverage for a dock, be sure to inform your agent if you plan to rent out your home.
